  • Five days after a sheriff's deputy found her in the woods with knife wounds on her neck and wrist, a 9-month-old baby girl was released from a hospital and into protective custody.
The Camden County Sheriff's Office announced the baby's release Wednesday morning as part of an ongoing case involving the baby and her mother that began Friday night. Bradie R. Simpson, 39, of Camdenton remains hospitalized. Capt. Kelly Luttrell of the Camden County Sheriff's Office stated Wednesday that her condition has been upgraded from "critical" to "good."
Simpson is charged with first degree assault and armed criminal action after deputies found her holding her daughter in the woods near her home on Dry Ridge Road. A deputy took what Det. John R. Stephens described in his official probable cause statement as an "unresponsive" baby from Simpson's arms. The 9-month-old had lacerations that required immediate surgery.
Deputies responded to Simpson's home at 12:26 a.m. on Saturday when her adult son reported Simpson and the baby missing. The man found blood and a knife in Simpson's bedroom. Deputies searched the woods and the gravel road near the home and found Simpson and the baby seated near a tree at approximately 4:00 a.m.
Simpson also had a knife laceration on her neck and needed "emergency life-saving treatment." She remains hospitalized and will be guarded by sheriff's deputies until she is fit to leave the hospital.
