The Marceline Lady Tigers hosted the Westran Lady Hornets in a Lewis and Clark Conference softball match-up last night at Lion’s Field in Marceline. The Lady Tigers struggled with one of the top programs in the LCC, as well as the overwhelming heat.
The Lady Hornets batted through their lineup in the top of the first. A series of walks, errors, and hit batsmen brought across three runs. The Lady Tigers responded in the home half of the frame. Abby Gauthier singled, and advanced to second on a dead ball into the media box. Sydnee Brooks was hit by a pitch, and Madison McCormick hit an RBI single. During an at-bat that saw Kate Peiffer walk, Brooks scored on a throwing error as Madison McCormick stole a base. Katie Cupp would hit an RBI single with two outs. After one inning, the game was tied 3-3.
Westran sent six to the plate in the top of the second, scoring one run. Morgan McCormick walked, and courtesy runner Claire Dorrell stole second on a wild pitch. After two innings, Marceline trailed 4-3.
In the top of the third, Westran sent six to the plate, and scored two runs, one on an RBI triple. The Lady Tigers went down in order in the bottom of the frame. After three innings, Marceline trailed 6-3.
Westrna went down in order in the top of the fourth, with pitcher Morgan McCormick striking out one. In the bottom of the frame, Heather Majors earned a walk in a pinch hitting capacity. Molly Shoop sacrificed her to second base. Morgan McCormick walked, and was replaced with Kelsey Gardner as a courtesy runner. Gauthier reached on an error to load the bases. All three would end the inning stranded on base. After four innings, Marceline trailed 6-3.
Westran sent six to the plate in the top of the fifth, and scored one run. Madison McCormick hit a double to lead off the bottom of the inning. Peiffer hit a single, and Madison scored on the throw, while Peiffer went to second. After five innings, Marceline trailed 7-4.
