The second round of this week’s Highway 36 Rivalry Week competitions saw the Brookfield Lady Dogs travel to Marceline for a softball showdown with the Lady Tigers. The Lady Tigers were also celebrating Senior Night last night as well.
Pitchers Morgan McCormick of Marceline and Sammi Overton of Brookfield were on the mound for their respective teams. Runs were certainly at a premium in this contest, and both pitchers and their defenses showed their stuff all night.
Alesa Frey led off with a single, but got caught in a line out double play. Neither team would have any more offense in the first inning. After one inning, the game was tied 0-0.
The Lady Dogs went down in order in the top of the second. Kate Peiffer hit a one out single for the Lady Tigers, and advanced to second off of a Fielder’s Choice by Hannah Dorrell. No runs crossed the plate in the second inning, and the game remained tied 0-0.
Ashley Kearns led off the third inning for the Lady Dogs by reaching on an error. Paige Clawson sacrificed her to second with one out. Frey singled again, but was thrown out in a close play at second. Marceline went down in order in the bottom of the frame. After three innings, the game was still tied 0-0.
Alexis Lindsay hit a one out single for the Lady Dogs in the top of the fourth. Megan Kearns singled as well, and was replaced as a courtesy by Sydney Thompson, but both would end up stranded. Madison McCormick hit a two out single for the Lady Tigers, and was joined by Peiffer after a walk. Both ended the inning stranded. After four innings, the game was tied 0-0.
Clawson walked with two outs for the Lady Dogs. Frey brought her home with an RBI single and advanced to second on an error. “It felt awesome to get the RBI,” said Frey. “It was a confidence boost against a quality team.” Andrea Piatt walked to lead off the bottom of the frame for Marceline. She was replaced on base as a pinch runner by Heather Majors, who ended the inning stranded. After five innings, Brookfield led 1-0.
