  • The first game of this “Rivalry Week” saw the JV Marceline Tigers travel to historic Burlington Field for a battle with the JV Brookfield Bulldogs.  The game was back-and-forth most of the night, with a few key drives making the difference.
Arturo Huerta kicked off to Trevor Hamilton who returned the ball to the Marceline 26.  Runs by Duane Avila and Jared Best set up Best for a 36-yard scamper for a Tigers first down at the Brookfield 33.  Four plays later, though, the Tigers would turn the ball over on downs at the Brookfield 27.
Anthony Cupp had a short gain on first down, and then found Cort Speichinger in the air for a 14-yard gain and a Brookfield first down.  Four plays later, again, the Dogs turned the ball over on downs at the 50 yard line.
The teams exchanged three-and-out’s for the remainder of the first quarter, which also featured a quarterback sack from Matt Teter of Brookfield.
Early in the second frame, Daniel Haas blocked a Brookfield punt, and it was recovered by Dylon Ewigman at the Tigers 49.  After a Tigers three-and-out, the Daniel Corbin punt would back Brookfield into a hole, with the ball starting at their own four yard line.
Brookfield went three-and-out, and Marceline started with the ball at the Dogs 17.  But two penalties would back them up and end the drive.  A good defensive stop from Brookfield on this series saw a tackle for a loss by Matt Teter and Cort Speichinger.
The teams would exchange possessions for the remainder of the first half.
Blaine Sportsman returned the Corbin kickoff to the Brookfield 43 to start the second half.  The Dogs would go three-and-out, thanks in-part to a stop for a loss by Avila and Tim Goosey.  Marceline would take over on downs at their own 48, but would fumble the snap to Sportsman at the Tigers 47 on the next play.  Seth Speichinger gained one on first down, and set up David Keller for a 46-yard touchdown run to score the game’s first points.  Huerta added the point-after, after a holding penalty lengthened his kick.

Dalton Fisher returned the Huerta kickoff to his own 34.  After a short gain by Avila, Cort Speichinger recovered a fumble for Brookfield at the Tigers 40.
Seth Speichinger found Cort Speichinger for a short pass, the Keller ran for the first down to the Tigers 19 on a 13-yard gain.  Sportsman gained 15-yards next, and set up Seth Speichinger for a four-yard touchdown run.  Huerta added the point-after.

Hamilton returned the Huerta kickoff to his own 23.  Runs by Avila and Best, as well as a pass from Bryce Jobson to Avila, came up short.  This was thanks, in-part, to a tackle for a loss by Teter.  Corbin’s punt was downed at the 50 yard line.
Page 2 of 2 - Runs by Maxwell and Matt Jackman set up a 16-yard gain for a first down by Sportsman.  This run negated a stop for a loss by Cory Hilsabeck for the Tigers.  Maxwell gained another first down with a  14-yard run to the Tigers 19.  Two more runs by Sportsman and Keller got the Dogs a First and Goal at the seven yard line.  Seth Speichinger found Maxwell for the aerial touchdown one play later.  Huerta added the point-after.

Best returned the Huerta kickoff to his own 28.  Corbin found Hamilton for a 22-yard gain on first down via the halfback pass.  On the next play, however, Tyler Sheppard stripped the football for a turnover at the Marceline 49.
A flag against the Dogs backed them up into their own territory and after a short run by Taylor Wallace, a big gain by Jackman was called back on another Brookfield penalty.  A run by Tyler Truitt and an incomplete pass would force a Brookfield punt.  The snap on said punt going bad, combined with a penalty on the Dogs, would give Marceline the ball at the Brookfield 13 yard line.
Fisher broke off an 11-yard run on first down to give the Tigers First and Goal at the two.  After a short run by Haas, Jobson would punch it in for the score.  The conversion pass was incomplete.
    Q4 5:24  Marceline 6  Brookfield 21
The teams would exchange possessions for the remainder of the game.  Big defensive plays included stops for a loss by Lane White, Corbin, and Goosey for Marceline; and a quarterback sack by Cole Hoover for the Dogs.
    Final – Marceline 6  Brookfield 21
“I think we played well for three quarters,” said Marceline JV Head Coach Jeff Wright.  “The third quarter we didn’t really show up to play.  We laid an egg in the third quarter, and it killed us.”
“I though our effort was great,” said Brookfield JV Head Coach Brock Hicks.  “We had been off for two or three weeks and were rusty offensively.  Defensively we did well, minus a bad snap on Special Teams.  We had to fix some blocking issues at halftime, and executed in the second half to come away with a victory.  I was proud of the kids.”
