  • While one Hall of Fame enshrinement is certainly an accomplishment, two Hall of Fame enshrinements could arguably make one a legend. While he is resistant to hear the term used about him, Shane Cavanah of Marceline is a coaching legend.
On December 5, as announced in a press release last week, Coach Cavanah will be enshrined in the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony at Kirksville's Truman State University. Cavanah will join the Class of 2012, which includes: Dr John D. Bailey, Bill Clark, Gary "Skip" Grossnickle, Gerald "Shag" Grossnickle, Darold Knowles, Ben Pittney, Bob Roberts, and the Truman State University Football Teams of 1969-1971.
"The most fun part of coaching was working with the kids," said Cavanah. "Through the ups and downs, the relationships you built were important. You kicked them in the fanny, and you patted them on the back."
Shane Cavanah compiled a career coaching record of 255-119-3, and was the Head Coach of the first ever Class One State Champions. Cavanah also coached two State Runner-up's, won 17 Conference Championships, and 16 District Championships. In his final season coaching, Cavanah coached a talented Marceline Tigers group to a State Quarterfinal appearance.
"It is great when a kid comes back to see you," said Cavanah. "You may not have always seen things eye-to-eye, but he comes back to thank you for keeping after him."
Another honor Cavanah recalls is the many namesakes he has around the State of Missouri. "There are a lot of Shane's out there," noted Cavanah. "That's a unique honor to have from some of my former players."
In the year 2000, Shane Cavanah was inducted into the Missouri Coaches Hall of Fame, which is located in a small part of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
The ceremony for Cavanah's induction will be at Truman State University on December 5 at 6:45 p.m. A reception will be held at Newman Catholic Center from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. A banquet will precede the enshrinement at 6 p.m. in the Georgian Room of the Student Center.
