The 2012-13 winter sports season is off to a roaring start, with the Marceline Tigers and Lady Tigers playing their first games of the season. The JV teams traveled to Trenton for a pair of games, while the Varsity tipped off with Slater.
The first Varsity contest of the season saw the Lady Tigers take on LCC foe Slater. A free throw from Abby Gauthier started Marceline off on a 3-0 run to take the lead. A 5-0 run prior to the midpoint of the frame extended the Lady Tigers lead. Marceline ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run and leading 17-4.
Slater snapped the run to start the second quarter, and finally achieved double-digits at the midpoint of the frame. A basket by Sydnee Brooks at 2:15 put the Lady Tigers up by 20 points. At halftime, Marceline led 35-11.
In the nightcap, the boys teams started slowly, and a three-pointer by Brett McGlothlin at 4:38 opened scoring. Slater immediately responded, and the Tigers then went on a 7-0 run. Slater responded with a 6-0 run of their own. After one quarter, Marceline led 14-8.
Another three-pointer from McGlothlin 16 seconds into the second quarter opened scoring and set the Tigers off on an 8-0 run for the first five minutes. The Tigers run came off of great defensive play, and solid ball movement allowing open baskets. Slater had a late 8-0 run to come back a little bit. At halftime, the Tigers led 28-18.
