The Brookfield DREAM (Downtown Revitalization Economic Assistance Missouri) Committee met at the Brookfield Area Growth Partnership Office on November 16 with a number of local leaders taking part in a rousing discussion about the next steps of the initiative.
The plan of action, concept drawings, and more are already in place. A pair of local residences in the DREAM zone have already been renovated, or are set to be renovated as a part of the DREAM initiative. Let’s take a look back at exactly what the DREAM is all about.
What is DREAM?
According to the DREAM Initiative’s website (www.modream.org): “The Downtown Revitalization and Economic Assistance for Missouri (DREAM) Initiative provides select communities with access to the technical and financial assistance they need to accomplish their downtown revitalization plans. The program is framed by a three-year commitment between the State of Missouri and designated communities to offer a comprehensive, streamlined approach to establish grassroots downtown revitalization.”
The DREAM program seeks to put back to productive use four key areas: land, neighborhoods, buildings, and downtown areas. By revitalizing these four key parts, the hope is to rebuild the struggling main streets of small and mid-sized Missouri towns.
What is the plan?
The plan for Brookfield’s DREAM was assembled by the Drury University Students some years ago, and was in place before the City’s DREAM certification. The plan put Brookfield on the fast track for the initiative and eliminated one of the biggest hurdles to a DREAM community.
One of the first parts of the plan designed by the Drury students was a set of enhanced guidelines for building design. The list of proposed facade and streetscape enhancements include:
- Removing frame, metal, and shingled facades;
- Removing paint from masonry using correct removal methods;
- Restore original windows;
- Restore transom windows;
- Utilize fabric/canvas awnings;
- Use compatible paint colors;
- Streetscape of lights, tree, and site furnishings.
