Amidst the spirit of cooperation that both schools are feeling in regards to the Best High School Rivalry Contest, the latest chapter of the Highway 36 Rivalry played out on the basketball court at Brookfield High School on Friday night. On this night, the Marceline Tigers and Brookfield Bulldogs went head-to-head in basketball.
In the girls game, a game opening basket by Madison McCormick sent the Lady Tigers off on a 5-0 run to take an early lead. A putback by Rebeca Kearns got the Lady Dogs on the board and ended the run. Steals by Abby Gauthier and baskets by Kendra Gladbach gave Marceline a five point lead, but a three-pointer by Miranda White would draw Brookfield within a point.
Moments later, a bucket by Sydney Thompson would put the Lady Dogs up for the first time in the game. But a late hoop by Morgan McCormick gave the Lady Tigers back the lead, 14-13, after one quarter.
Gladbach and White would exchange baskets to open the second quarter for their respective teams. But it would be Gladbach who would dominate the scoring in the frame. Gladbach would score nine in the second, and the Lady Tigers would open the game up to double-digits at halftime. After two quarters, Marceline led Brookfield 31-19.
In the nightcap, an opening bucket by Brett McGlothlin for Marceline was answered with a three-pointer by Tristen Duncan for Brookfield. A 5-0 run gave the Tigers the lead, but a hoop by Matt Neeley answered for the Dogs. Brookfield went from here to build a lead, but a late three-pointer by Daniel Haas would put Marceline within a bucket of Brookfield, 14-12, after one quarter.
The teams were scoreless for over two minutes in the second quarter, ending with a hoop by Marcus Liebhart for the Dogs. McGlothlin would respond for the Tigers with a four point streak to tie the game. The teams would score back and forth for the rest of the frame. A late basket by Cole Hoover would give Brookfield the lead, but a buzzer-beating three-pointer by McGlothlin would put Brookfield down 30-27 at the half.
