Monday night, the Brookfield basketball teams hosted Westran at Brookfield High School in a pair of non-Conference games. The teams split wins on this night, with the Lady Dogs bouncing back from their loss to Marceline, and the Dogs losing after holding a halftime lead.
In the girls game, Bailey Parks scored first, and the Lady Dogs took off on a 6-0 run to open the game in the first three-and-a-half minutes. Westran would score one more hoop at the buzzer to end a second 5-0 run, and the Lady Dogs led 11-4 after one quarter.
The Lady Hornets scored first in the second frame, and just over one minute into the quarter, Samantha Gonzalez responded for the Lady Dogs. A second hoop made a 4-0 run, ending with a Westran three-pointer. The teams would score back and forth in the frame, and Brookfield would drain three’s from Parks and Gonzalez. At halftime, the Lady Dogs led 25-11.
In the boys game, Westran opened with a 3-0 run, ending with a hoop by Cale McCurley just over a minute into the game. The Hornets went from there on a 7-0 run, ending with a three-pointer by Tristen Duncan from Cole Hoover two minutes later. At just under the five minute mark, Brookfield tied the game at 10-10 with a Matt Neeley hoop. One minute later, Dean Gall drained a shot to put the Dogs up by two. After one quarter was in the books, Brookfield led 14-10.
Westran pulled within one with a quarter-opening three pointer in the second, which was answered by McCurley in the first minute. Three-and-a-half minutes into the frame, the Dogs increased their lead to five points. At the six-and-a-half minute mark, the Dogs lead had shrunk, but grew back to six points. A buzzer-beating three-pointer by the Hornets closed the Brookfield lead to 24-23 at the half.
