Thursday night was a heartbreaking night for basketball fans in this area. Both Truman State teams lost and the Missouri Tigers lost as well.
The Missouri Tigers may have all their players back but something is still missing. Texas AandM is not a bad team but they aren’t a particularly good team either. Missouri was once a very good team who over the past three weeks have become mediocre at best. Phil Pressey has either forgotten how to play the game of basketball or there is something else going on with him because he looks like he is playing another game shomewhere else and only drops by occasionally to participate in Mizzou’s games. Quite honestly at this point I wish he wouldn’t even bother to drop by at all. Missouri did make a fierce comeback late in the second half and had a chance to win it at the end but it was a comeback they never should have had to make. You can make the excuse that Missouri has never played well at Texas AandM but the fact still remains that Missouri is underachieving in a major way right now and they not only have yet to get a road win in the SEC but are about to undertake the toughest part of their schedule and simply must start playing better to have any chance of winning most of their remaining games. Ole Miss comes to Columbia tomorrow for a rematch of a game played a month ago where Missouri played one of their worst games of the year. That appeared to be kind of a spring board for Ole Miss who have been playing much better of late while Missouri has taken a couple of steps back. Hopefully being back in Mizzou Arena will give the Tigers the edge they need.
The Truman State Bulldogs road trip got off to a bad start on Thursday night with both teams losing at Pittsburg State. The women had one of their worst offensive games of the year against a very good Pitt State team while the men once again did everything but win. The men led a good portion of the game before coming up a little short at the end and losing by four points. Both teams will be in action on Saturday at Northeastern Oklahoma which is not in mid America MIAA.
The Truman State football team had a very good signing day this past Wednesday with some tremendously gifted student athletes committing to play football in Kirksville. In looking at the list of signees it appears that several of them could step into the program and make an immediate impact. The Bulldogs coaching staff have to be pleased with the group of young men headed into the program.
In one of the few good things to happen in college basketball the Kansas Jayhawks have now lost two games in a row as they went down to defeat at the hands of the TCU Horned Frogs on Wednesday night. I had forgotten that TCU even played in the Big Twelve and obviously Kansas did too.
Both Kirksville High School basketball teams are in action on Friday night as they take on the Mexico Bulldogs for Court Warming. The boys are looking to get back on the winning track while the girls look to continue their impressive season by beating a team they handily beat earlier in the year.
The KHS wrestling team is headed to St. Charles for districts this weekend. I would not be at all surprised if they not only win the team title but the entire team qualifies for the state tournament in Columbia.
We’ll be back on Monday with a look back at all this weekend’s sports action and a look ahead to what’s coming up next week. Who knows, maybe Kansas will lose again. Thanks as always for your support of this blog and please support all the blogs on this site.
Have a terrific weekend!
