Domain Name System (DNS) Scams
Many businesses (including ous) have received what appears to be an authentic invoice from a company called “DNS Services.” At first glance, this invoice looks legitimate, but upon closer inspection, you will find that it’s a solicitation, not a bill. They’re hoping that you will just pay. This is serious because you could lose control of your domain name and pay higher fees. Read the fine print:
“This is a solicitation for the order of goods or services, or both, and not a bill, invoice, or statement of account due. You are under no obligation to make any payments on account of this offer unless you accept this offer.”
Please take the time to know who is hosting your website and your domain name. These are important parts of your businesss and should be housed with someone you trust. Today might be a good day to look into this.
Yellow Page Advertisement Scams
This scam is more common and a LOT of companies have fallen for it. These companies will send invoices via fax or mail in hopes that you will send a check without paying attention to the details. For those who don’t pay, they are often called by a salesperson who claims to have written or recorded approval for services. They will go so far as to threaten to turn your account over to debt collectors and request your credit card information. Again, read the fine print: "This is not a bill."
