Bernrad Dwight Evans, 87, Laclede, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at Pershing Memorial Hospital, Brookfield.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Wright-Baker-Hill Funeral Home, Brookfield, with Rev. Ted Stockwell and Rev. Richard Casady officiating. Visitation will began at 1 p.m. today, Feb. 22, 2013, at the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 6-8 that evening. Burial will be in Parklawn Cemetery, Brookfield.

Bernard Dwight was born March 22, 1925, in Lineville, Iowa, son of Ivan and Lottie (Lightwine) Evans. His family moved to Laclede in 1938 and he graduated from Laclede High School in May 1943. He was inducted into the US Navy in June 1943 and was stationed at Farragut, Idaho, San Diego, Calif., Rhode Island, and New Port, Va. He was assigned to the USS Missouri and was present at the Christening and Commissioning of the ship in New York, and his parents were able to visit him and attend the ceremony. Bernard was one of 38 Missouri men onboard the USS Missouri when the Japanese envoys came aboard to sign the final surrender document at the end of World War II. He was discharged from the US Navy in March 1946 with the rank of Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class. He and his brother, Junior, operated a feed and produce business in Laclede for several years. On February 15, 1952, he married Patricia Ryan. In 1960,  he and Junior sold their business in Laclede, and he began working for Burlington Northern Railroad where he was a brakeman and conductor and retired in April 1990 after 30 years of service. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Laclede, and had been a member of Linn County Antique Tractor Association and UTU of the Railroad.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia, of the home; his children, Dennis Evans and wife, Bridget, Laclede, Ed Vans, Milan, Suzanne Jacobs and husband, Ryan, and Amy Sayre and husband, Jeff, all of Brookfield; seven grandchildren, Stacie Carril and husband, Matt, St. Louis, Jenny Flynn and husband, Pat, Denver, Colo., Dustin Evans, Milan, Hannah Pflugradt and husband, Ryan, Gower, Cara Evans and fiance, Ryan Gibson, Dearborn, Eric Speichinger and husband, Luke, Brookfield, and Dana Horner and husband, Tyler, St. Joseph; five great-grandchildren, Ava and Evan Pflugradt, Hudson Horner, Hayden Flynn and Owen Carril; one brother, Junior Evans, Laclede; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Bernie Evans; and one sister, Reba Porter.
