The Marceline Lady Tigers may have been delayed in the second round by snow, but nothing stopped them from claiming a District Championship. This is only the programs second District Championship in the last six seasons.
The Tigers took on Putnam County to start things Friday night. The Tigers fell behind early, as their opponents took off on a 6-0 run to start the game. Marceline finally got on the board with a hoop from Frankie Herring. Late fouls in the first frame allowed the Tigers to remain in the game, and a buzzer-beating bucket from Chase Hilsabeck would cut the Marceline deficit to 19-10 after one quarter.
Putnam opened the second frame with a 4-0 run, and would expand their lead to double-digits before the midpoint of the frame. A pair of free throws by Brett McGlothlin would set the Tigers off on a run that would cut their deficit to seven points. With just over a minute left in the half, Hilsabeck drained a three-pointer to close within three. But, a quarter-ending 4-0 run would put Marceline down 35-27 at halftime. However, The Tigers did outscore their opponents in the second frame.
In the District Championship game, the Lady Tigers would do battle with the hosting Schuyler County Lady Rams. Marceline had topped the Schuyler girls on this same court earlier in the season.
Gauthier found Morgan for a hoop to start the game. Schuyler would respond with a three-pointer. The teams would fight evenly early on, and after one quarter, the game was tied 10-10.
Marceline would start the second frame on a 5-0 run with points coming from Madison, Morgan and Brooks. Another run by the Lady Tigers, this one going to 9-0, would extend their lead late in the half. At the end of the second quarter, Marceline led 28-18.
