  • The stands were filled with a raucous student section, most of them adorned with the symbol of DC Comics legend Superman.  Walking in as the eighth-ranked team in the State of Missouri, the Marceline Lady Tigers may very well have been facing Superman in the form of top-ranked Silex Wednesday night in Ewing at Highland High School.  But on this occasion, the Lady Tigers showed that they had some Kryptonite, as they overcame the odds to advance to the State Quarterfinals this weekend.
Silex started the game on a 4-0 run in the first 45 seconds.  A hoop by Morgan McCormick put Marceline on the board.  Silex responded with a three-pointer to extend their lead.  The Lady Tigers fought back from here, shutting out the outrageous student section supporting Silex, and would take the lead at the 5:35 mark on a three-pointer from Kendra Gladbach.  This would be the first lead of the game for Marceline, and proved to be a lead they would never lose.  At the end of one quarter, the Lady Tigers led 14-10.
Silex closed to within a bucket with a hoop to open the second quarter.  Marceline responded with a 9-0 run, with baskets coming from Molly Shoop, Sydnee Brooks, Madison McCormick.  Shoop and Abby Gauthier had assists in the run, and Brooks drained a three-pointer to extend the Lady Tigers lead to double-digits.  At the half, Marceline led 32-22.
“We worked so hard to get here as a team,” said Sydnee Brooks, who led the team in scoring in the first half.  “You never think you will be here until it happens.”
This Saturday, the Lady Tigers will travel to Moberly Area Community College for a State Quarterfinal battle with Sturgeon at 1:45 p.m.  Marceline comes in with a record of 26-3, while Sturgeon comes in with a record of 26-2.  A pep bus will leave from Marceline High School at Noon on Saturday, and is free for grades 3-12.  Admission to the game will be $6.
