  • Lady Tigers Fall in Semis, Play for Third
The Marceline Lady Tigers winning streak since January has come to an end. The Lady Tigers took on New Haven in the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) State Basketball Championships semifinals. The Lady Tigers had some shooting trouble at the Hearnes Center, and will compete for third place tonight at 5 p.m.
The game was slow-paced to start off, with the opening hoop coming from Sydnee Brooks by way of Abby Gauthier at the 1:26 mark. New Haven evened the score with a pair of free throws one minute later. New Haven would take a lead from here, but Marceline would battle back to close within one with a pair of free throws by Morgan McCormick at the 5:32 mark. A late hoop by New Haven, though, would put the Lady Tigers down 8-5 after one quarter.
Morgan would drain a pair of free throws just over one minute into the second frame to close Marceline within a point. New Haven would finally answer two-and-a-half minutes later with a three-pointer to re-extend their lead. The Lady Tigers would have trouble shooting the ball effectively in the second quarter, and would be outscored 17-6 in the frame. At the half, Marceline trailed 25-11.
Shortly after the second half started, Morgan drained a hoop to start things well for the Lady Tigers. New Haven went on a 4-0 run from there. Ending with a Kendra Gladbach basket at the 3:49 mark, again with Gauthier gaining the assist. Madison McCormick would add a hoop as well to match their opponents efforts with a 4-0 run. The teams would exchange buckets to bring the third quarter to a close. With be quarter remaining in the game, Marceline trailed 37-22.
New Haven would start the final frame with a free throw, which Madison responded to shortly thereafter. A mid-quarter 4-0 run with buckets coming from Gladbach and Gauthier would pull Marceline within 12 points. The teams would score fairly evenly in the final frame, with fouling issues causing New Haven to get time at the charity stripe. In the end, Marceline lost this game by a final score of 49-33.
Lady Tigers End Season as Fourth in State
The Marceline Lady Tigers concluded their first visit to the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) State Basketball Championships on Friday night at Mizzou Arena in Columbia. The Lady Tigers did battle with Skyline in the Class Two Girls Third Place game.
The game started off well for Marceline with Madison McCormick finding Morgan McCormick for the opening basket less than 30 seconds in. Skyline would answer with a 7-0 run, ending with a hoop from Sydnee Brooks 90 seconds later. Skyline would drain three from downtown in the opening frame. But the local Lady Tigers would scrap and fight throughout the frame. After one quarter was in the books, Marceline trailed 21-15.
Page 2 of 2 - Skyline opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run in the first three minutes, ending with a Kendra Gladbach steal and hoop. Gladbach would add a three-pointer a minute later to pull Marceline within 11. The teams would stalemate from here, with both teams going scoreless until a three from Skyline with less than 30 seconds in the half. A putback from Brooks would bank in at the buzzer to leave the Lady Tigers trailing 36-24 at the half.
Skyline opened the third quarter with a 3-0 run, ending with a basket from Brooks at the 1:27 mark. Madison would add a hoop and a free throw and Brooks would add two more free throws to close the gap to eight points just past the halfway mark of the quarter. After three quarters were in the books, Marceline trailed 45-38.
A mere 16 seconds into the final frame, Gladbach would open with a basket to close the deficit to six points. Skyline responded with a 5-0 run in the next two minutes, ending with another bucket from Gladbach. Marceline responded with a 6-0 run in the next two minutes and closed the gap to four points. During this run, the Lady Tigers got points from Gladbach and Madison. Skyline, though, would go on an 8-0 run from here. This run, combined with foul issues, would put the contest out of reach for the local girls. Marceline ends their season placing fourth in the State with a 64-53 loss.
