  • Biography:  I moved to Marceline when I was six years old in 1979, and graduated from MHS in 1991 before earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia. I taught business at Marceline High School for eight years. After the untimely death of my dad, I felt the need to change career paths. Currently a full-time Allstate Insurance agent, I teach business courses through North Central Missouri College in Trenton. I am married to Bill Rodgers and have two children, Cassi (age 7) and Cody (age 4). I have served for many years on the Marceline Education Foundation and Marceline Booster Club, working for school-related causes I believe in strongly.
    First Issue:  As a Marceline R-5 Board member, two issues I find important are the district preschool and the school accountability system (MSIP).
    The Marceline Early Learning Center has proved a great addition to the District. My four-year-old son attends each day, and I’ve seen first-hand the positive impact on his learning. As kindergarten readiness becomes increasingly important to schools, I think curriculum development at the preschool level deserves our attention. What the Marceline ELC staff has started in the four-year-old room, including sight word recognition and technology skills through the one-to-one iPad initiative, is impressive and beneficial to our area families.
    Second Issue:  The Missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP) has existed for over twenty years to review and accredit public school districts in Missouri. Now entering its fifth cycle, MSIP 5 ties to Annual Performance Reports (APRs), which review every public Missouri district to recognize high-performing districts as models and determine what support is needed elsewhere. Seeking to promote continuous improvement and communicate clearly to stakeholders (community members, parents, school employees, etc.), MSIP 5 evaluates districts on categories like the following: test results, advanced course offerings, college and career education placement, graduation and attendance rates, class size ratios, and staff qualifications. Because MSIP 5 will drive many factors related to school success, I feel it is crucial for board members to understand. Demands for student achievement grow increasingly rigorous under MSIP 5; students are being tested more and the expectations are stricter than in years past. With this change in student requirements, more will be asked of school staff through a changing teacher evaluation process. With these changes in MSIP 5 to ensure all students are ready for college and/or career upon high school graduation, we want Marceline to receive the Accreditation with Distinction classification as we have the past ten out of eleven years.   I believe board members can better serve the district with a clear understanding of school accountability.
