The Marceline R-5 Board of Education met in regular session Monday night with all members present. The Board approved the start date for school next year, hired all certified staff after approving a raise, toured the new weight room, talked winter cheerleading and approved financing on new buses.
The meeting was called to order for a public hearing at 6 p.m. sharp by President Tom Hauser, and with no one from the public there to comment, the meeting was adjourned to regular session. There was no public participation, and the Lady Tigers Basketball Team was recognized for their Final Four season.
The agenda was amended to add three items, and both it and the consent agenda were approved unanimously after a motion and second by Judy Toops and Matt Cupp, respectively.
The lone item of unfinished business for the Board was the approval of the stipend for R-5 staff members taking part in the upcoming Active Shooter Training on April 1. There are currently 78 staff members taking part in the training, so the stipend will cost the District approximately $15,600. The total cost to the District will be $18,330, and the sending District’s will reimburse Marceline R-5 at a rate of $50 per staff member trained. The stipend was approved unanimously after a motion and second by Cindi Black Rodgers and Lex Cavanah.
Bud Seyler, Chair of the Salary Liaison Committee, presented his committee’s recommendation to the Board for next year’s salaries in the District. The teacher’s proposal was a $750 increase to the minimum salary, and a District-wide insurance deductible of $1000.
Superintendent Gabe Edgar thanked the teachers and the committee for their hard work in preparing their presentation. Edgar noted that due to the uncertainty surrounding their financial situation in the wake of the Senate passing SB 26, which would alter income taxes, he had to make a different recommendation than the teachers had made.
Edgar recommended the Board move all teachers over and down on the salary scale, add $500 to the base salary, and make the insurance deductible $1000 across the District. Edgar also noted that this would be the first time in his tenure that the insurance deductible would reach this level. The Board unanimously accepted Superintendent Edgar’s recommendation after a motion and second by Cavanah and Toops.
Melody Potter and Angella Taylor presented the evaluation of the District’s Guidance and Assessment Programs. Mrs. Potter noted the state is now requiring the reporting of the ASVAB test’s results, which the District was already doing. Mrs. Taylor reported on the progress made with her students in the Elementary, and broke down her day for the Board. Their reports were approved unanimously after a motion and second by Toops and Charlie Jobson.
