  • At last week’s Marceline R-5 Board of Education meeting, the Board unanimously hired John Kruse to replace Kent O’Laughlin as Head Coach of the Marceline Tigers Varsity basketball team.  Kruse is in his first year with the District, and brings excitement and experience to the team he can now call his own.
“It feels great to be named as the Head Coach of the Marceline Tigers,” said Kruse.  “It has been a goal of mine to become a head coach since I got into coaching and I feel very honored and blessed that it happened at a great school like Marceline.    I can’t wait to get to work with the kids and see what the upcoming year has in store for us.”
Coach Kruse came to Marceline by way of Lewis and Clark Conference rivals Salisbury and Westran.  Kruse was the Assistant Coach for the Tigers this season, and takes over the boys while Coach O’Laughlin shifts his focus solely to the Lady Tigers team.
“I attended Salisbury High School from 2004-2007 and was fortunate enough to be a part of some very successful teams,” said Coach Kruse.  “We placed third in the MSHSAA State Tournament in 2005 and that certainly is an accomplishment I will always be proud of.”
Kruse continued:  “My background as a coach started two years ago. I was able to be an assistant for Coach Scott Humphrey, who is currently the Head Coach at Westran High School.  I definitely valued the   experience and lessons I learned under Coach Humphrey; he was a tremendous player and an even better coach, and I owe him a lot for my start in coaching.”
But it was this past season that may have shaped Kruse even more than his past. “This past school year, I was extremely fortunate to be able to get a teaching and coaching position with the Marceline R-5 School District,” said Kruse.  “Along with that, I had the distinct pleasure to be an assistant for Coach Kent O’Laughlin.    Coach O’Laughlin has had a large amount of success throughout his career as a coach, and he was a tremendous help to me throughout this past school year in terms of helping my development as a young coach. The amount I learned from Coach O’Laughlin this year is too much to describe, but I’ll forever be thankful for the opportunity to be his assistant.”
