  • Veda Johnson, 96, Sumner, died Tuesday, April 25, 2013, at Pleasant Valley Manor Care, Liberty.
    Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Wright-Baker-Hill Funeral Home, Brookfield. Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Sumner.
    Memorials to the Sumner United Methodist Church or Lakeside Cemetery may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, PO Box 496, Brookfield, MO 64628.
    Veda Mae was born April 20, 1917, in Sumner, daughter of Thomas J. and Della Mae (Christmas) Johnson, Jr. On June 17, 1939, she married Beverly Hugh Johnson in Chillicothe. He preceded her in death August 8, 1974.
    Veda Mae graduated from Sumner High School in 1935 earning the honor of Valedictorian. She lived in Sumner all her life until moving in 2011 to Pleasant Valley. She taught school at Locust Creek Country School near Sumner for several years and worked at Walsworth Publishing Company, Marceline, for three years. She opened her own quilting business in Sumner in 1977, Veda’s Quilt Box. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Sumner, and was very active in church activities. She had served as Tax Collector for Cunningham Township in Chariton County for 34 years. She had also served on the Purvis Cemetery Board, the Sumner Community Betterment Board, and the Fulbright Museum Board. She was also a founder of the Pioneer Kitchen in Sumner.
    Survivors include one son, Eugene Johnson and wife, Mary Lou; two daughters, Judy Kemp and husband, Gordon and Kathy Monson and husband, Victor; seven grandchildren, Kevin Johnson and wife, Anita, Todd Johnson, Eric Johnson and wife, Donna, Julie Kemp Carleton and husband, Rick, Susan Kemp Shaw and husband, Michael, Christopher Kemp and wife, Kim, and Kate Monson Hoops and husband, Jeff; 10 great-grandchildren, Nathan Johnson, Emily Johnson, Thomas Johnson, and Aleah Johnson, Dakota Troglin, Emily Carleton, Olivia Carleton, Kaitlyn Shaw, Jenna Kemp, and Simon Hoops; and several nieces, nephews, and their families.
    She was also preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Ryan Monson; an infant great-grandson, Alex Hugh-Kemp Carleton; four sisters, Mabel Bayte, Bessie Johnson, Faye Leaton, and Georgia Harding; and one brother, Howard Johnson.
