The Way I See It
My name is Dennis Miller and I am a lifelong resident of Kirksville, MO. I have been totally blind since birth and a sports fanatic just as long. I like all sports but love baseball and am a proud lifelong member of Cardinal Nation. It is my honor to be given the opportunity to write a blog for the Kirksville Daily Express and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it.

The made for TV event known as the NFL draft kicked off last night with very little in the way of suspense or drama.  The Kansas City Chiefs had the first overall pick and did as expected by drafting one of the two available offensive tackles.  This year’s drop of draftees did not have any real standout players in my opinion, there were good players but no great players.  The Chiefs certainly needed a talented offensive tackle and appear to have gotten one but their needs went beyond what the draft was able to provide.  The St. Louis Rams probably benefitted more from the draft than the Chiefs did but there is still a long way to go as round 2 and 3 are today and rounds 4 through 7 are tomorrow.  Yes, they could certainly do the draft much faster but then there would be no purpose to Mel Kiper’s life.  What does that guy do the rest of the year anyway?  Former Missouri Tigers standout Sheldon Richardson was drafted 13th by the New York Jets by the way.

The St. Louis Cardinals got their brooms out for the first time this year and swept the Washington Nationals completing the sweep with a victory on Wednesday afternoon.  The Cardinals aren’t exactly tearing it up offensively but are certainly getting the job done and are getting excellent starting pitching with only a couple of bad outings this year.  The Cardinals finally get to sleep in their own beds again as they begin a three game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight at Bush Stadium.

The Kansas City Royals split the two games they were able to play in Detroit against the Tigers as they won in extra innings yesterday.  Alex Gordon hit a grand slam home run in the 10th inning to seal the deal and make the plan ride back to Kansas City a happy one as the Royals begin a weekend series against the Cleveland Indians tonight.

Fresh off an impressive showing at the Macon Relays on Wednesday the Kirksville High School track teams head to Hannibal for another big relay today.  There were several outstanding individual performances turned in by KHS track athletes on Wednesday and a couple of records set.  The girls have now finished first in the last two relays they have participated in while the boys have had several outstanding individual performances especially from Andrew Gordon.

After a tough loss at Rockbridge last night the KHS baseball team faces Booneville in a home game this evening out at North Park.  The Tigers continue to get quality pitching in just about every game.

The KHS boys tennis team continues to improve as they posted another impressive victory yesterday.

Speaking of impressive victories, the KHS girls soccer team has had its share of those this year including yesterday’s shutout victory.

NASCAR is in Richmond this weekend for Sprint Cup and Nationwide races with the Spring Cup race being held on Saturday night for only the second time this year.

The NBA playoffs continue with several teams including the LA Lakers looking at almost certain elimination this weekend.

We’ll be back on Monday with a review of all this weekend’s sports action and a look ahead to next week.  The are lots of local sporting events this weekend so I hope you will take the opportunity to get out and support our area athletes.  Thanks as always for supporting this and all the blogs on this site.

Have a terrific weekend!
