Small Town Claims To Fame & Other Random Nonsense

My name is Jamison Huhner and my blog presents and discusses claims to fame for small towns all over the U.S. And other random nonsense. Claims to fame include celebrity residents past and present, historic events (battles, crimes), oddities, records of some sort and a million other things.  I’m a graduate of Devils Lake Central and, eventually, a graduate from the University of North Dakota with degrees in Russian/Soviet studies and business. After college I moved south to Atlanta before finally ending up in Nashville where I now live with my wife and twin boys.

The Small Town – Streeter, North Dakota           Population 167 (2010 Census)

The Claim to Fame – The Straightest Road in the United States

If you are prone to falling asleep at the wheel or if you are are one of those people that likes to drive and read while steering with your legs, this claim to fame might interest you and Streeter, North Dakota just might be the town for you. Maybe it should be called Straighter, North Dakota since the highway that runs east of town is straighter than any other stretch of highway in the United States.   OK, that play on words was weak and unamusing.  Sad almost. Maybe I should delete it?  Nah.  It’s my blog and I can be stupid if I want.  Anyway, where were we? Oh, yes, Streeter, North Dakota, home to the western terminus of 123 miles of the straightest road in the entire United States.  The eastern end is in Hickson, North Dakota.  The road consists of Highway 30 in the west to Highway 46 in the east

Now no highway is, of course, perfectly straight, but there is a 31 mile stretch, between Gackle and Beaver Creek, that is about as close as it gets. This is where a little bit of controversy enters the situation.  There is a stretch of highway in Utah, Interstate 80 to be exact, that runs almost perfectly straight for about 35 miles across the Bonneville Salt Flats and many map geeks claim that this is the straightest stretch of highway in the United States.  Now here’s an aerial view of the Bonneville Salt Flats.

I mean, come on, of course the road is straight.  There is nothing to have to swerve around. It looks like North Dakota in the winter.

Ok, so let’s say North Dakota’s stretch of highway is the straightest stretch of highway in the United States in an area where people actually live and things actually grow.  The real world.
