After splitting their two games with the Houston Astros earlier this week the St. Louis Cardinals find themselves tied for first place with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates have usually fallen toward the bottom of the heap by now but they have very quietly been putting together a phenomenal season so far and have been nipping at the Cardinals heels all year. It’s hard to believe that the two teams with the best records in baseball are both in the NL Central. The Cardinals are in the midst of a tough road trip and begin a three game series with the Oakland A’s tonight before moving on to Anaheim to play the Angels next week. The A’s and Rangers have been swapping places in the battle for the Al West lead and the Angels have started to turn their season around so these are not going to be an easy stretch of games for the Cardinals.
The Kansas City Royals split their two game series with the Atlanta Braves earlier this week before heading to Minnesota for a four game series with the Twins which began last night with the Royals losing. It would appear that whatever momentum the Royals had a couple of weeks ago has been lost as they continue to hit poorly and the strain is starting to show on their pitching staff who have for the most part pitched very well this year without much run support.
The NBA draft cook place last night and Phil Pressey did not hear his name called. There is still a chance he could be signed as a free agent but he was skipped over completely in last night’s two rounds of drafting. In what was somewhat of a surprise to me Alex Oriakhi was drafted by the Phoenix Suns who are desperate for anything at this point but Pressey was not. I think that there were a couple of reasons for that. First, there were very few big men in this year’s draft which by all accounts was a very weak one with many foreign players being drafted very early in the first round and continuing throughout the two rounds. I think this made it easier for a team to take a chance on Oriakhi who at times showed excellent potential while playing center for the Missouri Tigers last year. Second, Pressey has the reputation of being uncoachable and many teams weren’t willing to waste a pick on someone like that even if the draft was a rather thin one this year. Pressey may very well find himself playing in the developmental league or in Europe.
NASCAR is in Kentucky this weekend for a Sprint Cup race tomorrow night and a Nationwide series race tonight. They will head back to Daytona next week.
Wimbledon continues this weekend as many of the top players have exited the tournament early. In fact many of the seeded players on both the women’s and men’s side are gone including Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for the men and Maria Sharapova for the women.
The AT&T Pro Am or whatever it’s called is underway with Roberto Castro, (whoever he is( leading after the first 18 holes.
The US Women’s Open golf tournament is also underway and will continue through Sunday.
The Tour De France begins tomorrow morning and will continue throughout the next several weeks. Why would you watch a bicycle race on TV? Lance Armstrong will not be a part of this year’s race.
We’ll be back on Monday with a look back at all of this weekend’s sports action and a look ahead to next week. Get out and enjoy the wonderful weather we are supposed to have this weekend.
