Today, the MetroWest Daily News published a piece by Eugene Robinson. I challenge Gatehouse Media to fact check the piece called Denied the Right to be Young, in which Robinson makes a series of outrageous statements about the Zimmerman case which are outrageous at best and dubious at worst. If Robinson has proof that the Sanford Police Department didn’t investigate the incident in question because of race, let him prove it. With regard to comments such as “even after six weeks, evidence was found to arrest Zimmerman…” maybe he could specify what he is referring to, because no evidence was ever found after six weeks. and his recitation of what the jury “knew” is, in fact, nothing more than a series of “inferences” that the prosecution asked the jury to infer based upon a flimsy record of confused facts. This column is inflammatory and emotional and irresponsible. I recognize that opinion columnists are given great leeway with facts, but in a case like this a casual disregard for facts and word choice has the potential to cause substantial harm to innocent people from violence caused by Robinson’s incitement. Even if a columnist wants to be grossly irresponsible, Gatehouse Media should not be complicit in his agenda.
