Agent Coulson isn't the only Avengers star appearing on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! Cobie Smulders will reprise her role as Agent Maria Hill on the series premiere, TVGuide.com has learned.
Fans who attended the S.H.I.E.L.D. panel at Comic-Con Friday got a first look at the pilot, which heavily features Smulders. Hill helps Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) as he assembles a select group of agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D., which investigates strange and unknown occurrences around the globe.
"I wanted very much to have Cobie in the pilot because as much as anyone else, she is S.H.I.E.L.D.," executive producer Joss Whedon says. "She's cool and commanding, and has the dry humor that plays so well with Clark's. Also, if she's in it, I get to hang out with Cobie."
For now, the 31-year-old actress only appears in the pilot. Whedon and ABC remain coy about whether she'll appear in further episodes, but sources note that she will not be a series regular on the drama. She's currently shooting the final season of How I Met Your Mother, which should keep her pretty busy. Naturally, with HIMYM coming to an end, fans can only hope that Smulders will make further appearances on the ABC drama.
Smulders first played Hill in The Avengers and she's slated to be part of Phase 2 of Marvel's next batch of films, which includes appearing in Captain America: Winter Soldier.
Smulders' appearance in the pilot, which has been shrouded in secrecy, is the best-kept secret Whedon has been holding onto next to how Agent Coulson is resurrected following his death in The Avengers. Spoiler Alert! In the pilot, Coulson believes he died briefly, but was revived shortly after. None of The Avengers could know the truth since they don't have the right clearance level. But when he's not around, Maria Hill notes that Coulson can never know the truth about his death, possibly giving credence to our theory about Coulson being a Life Model Decoy. Whedon has previously noted that the mystery behind Coulson's revival will unfold throughout the season, so don't expect an answer soon!
