MEADVILLE — A pair of Meadville boys were life-flighted to University Hospital in Columbia Saturday night after being ejected during a single-vehicle accident just south of Meadville.
Derek R. Smith, 18 of Meadville, was driving a 1999 Chevrolet pickup southbound on Route W, two miles south of Meadville, at approximately 10 p.m. Saturday night. Eighteen-year-old Mason D. Kiehl was riding along as a passenger in the front seat.
Neither boy was wearing his seatbelt.
Smith lost control of the pickup and ran off the west side of the roadway. The pickup then rolled several times, ejecting both Smith and Kiehl before coming to rest on its top in a ditch.
Both boys were transported from the scene by Linn County Ambulance and then on to University Hospital in Columbia by helicopter. Their injuries were described as 'serious.'
Assisting Highway Patrol Sgt. Tim Shoop at the scene was Trooper P.B. Grubaugh and a Missouri Conservation Agent.
