Zelma Newman, 83, Brookfield, died Monday morning, July 22, 2013, at Lakeview Village, Lenexa, Kan.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 25, 2013, at First Christian Church, Brookfield. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today, July 24, 2013, at Wright-Baker-Hill Funeral Home, Brookfield, with the family receiving friends from 6-8 this evening. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Brookfield.

Zelma Ellen was born October 11, 1929, in St. Catharine, daughter of Grover and Ena (McClintick) Wine. On October 21, 1951, she married Keith Newman.
Zelma attended the Carey Rural School for eight years and graduated from Brookfield High School. After graduation she worked for Brookfield Chickeries and then Wheatcraft Motor Company, Ritter Ford Sales and Bob Fine Ford Sales, and Missouri Power Light, all in Brookfield. She later worked as the secretary to the principal at Brookfield High School until her retirement in 1990. For 20 years following retirement she and Keith traveled to Mission, Texas, where they enjoyed milder weather and square dancing. She was an active member of First Christian Church, Brookfield. Her proudest achievement was being elected as the first woman to the Board of Elders and later first woman Elder Emeritus of the church. She also served as a Deacon and was active in Christian Women's Fellowship and other activities of the church. She had been a member of Beta Sigma Phi for over 50 years, was a member of Red Hat Rovers, Mutual Improvement Club, Missouri Retired Teachers Association, Ladies Auxiliary of Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, Tanglefoot Squares Dance Club, and on Old New Garden Cemetery Board.
Survivors include her husband, Keith Newman, Brookfield; her children, Dennis and wife, Chris Newman, Shawnee, Kan., and Lynne and husband, Steve Edgar, Wichita, Kan.; her grandchildren, Joshua and wife, Aubrey Newman, Ashley Newman, Matthew Newman, Charley Edgar and Maizey Edgar; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Edd and Curtis Wine; and one sister, Dorene Asher.
