The Way I See It
My name is Dennis Miller and I am a lifelong resident of Kirksville, MO. I have been totally blind since birth and a sports fanatic just as long. I like all sports but love baseball and am a proud lifelong member of Cardinal Nation. It is my honor to be given the opportunity to write a blog for the Kirksville Daily Express and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it.

Note to the St. Louis Cardinals: could we spread the runs out a little better please! After losing seven games in a row for the first time in almost two years the Cardinals rebounded with a 13 to 0 thrashing of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. Joe Kelly has his second excellent pitching start in a row and this time the Cardinals gave him the offensive support to make it hold up. The Cardinals are still a game and a half out of first place but at least their losing streak is over. They need to keep whatever momentum they gained last night going as they begin a three game weekend series in Cincinnati tonight against the Reds who are currently four games behind the Cardinals.
The trade deadline came and went without the Cardinals acquiring anyone and I think that was to be expected. The Cardinals are in kind of an interesting position right now in that it may be hard to get anyone via trade because they have so many good young pitchers on their roster. The downside to have the top rated minor league system in baseball is that every other team wants your players. In order to get a veteran player most teams are going to demand a package of young prospects in return and the Cardinals did the right thing in my opinion by not giving away any of those brilliant young arms.
The Kansas City Royals have won 9 straight and are still 6 and a half games out of first place in the AL Central. The Royals are three games about .500 which is almost unheard of for them at this point in the season. They are in New York to play the Mets this weekend. No, that is not a typo. This stupid new schedule that MLB has come up with has all sorts of weird matchups like that as there is at least one interleague series and usually two or three going on every day. I don’t mind a few series a year concentrated in one stretch but why MLB decided to do it this way is beyond me.
The Truman State Bulldog football team was picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Valley Conference during the GLVC’s Media Day held on Wednesday. It’s been a very long time since the Bulldogs have been picked anywhere close to that high in a pre season poll. The MIAA made it a point to pick the Bulldogs as low as they possibly could year in and year out until it became nothing more than a farce and I don’t know why Truman even bothered wasting money to attend the thing. For those still upset about Truman changing conferences keep in mind that the MIAA made it pretty darn clear they didn’t want us any more and we made it clear we didn’t need them any more so I think it was a win/win for all parties.
NASCAR is in the Poconos this weekend for the gobowling.com 400 on Sunday. NASCAR would like to ask that you please not go bowling until after they have driven 400 miles. AT the end of the race a large bowling ball will hurtle from the sky boinking the winning driver on the head before smashing into his car so you will want to stay tuned for that.
It’s the women’s turn this weekend as the women’s British Open is underway as I write this. They unfortunately were greeted by cold rainy weather as they attempt to get the tournament in despite the wet conditions.
NFL training camps are now all open and the first pre season game takes place on Sunday. The Missouri Tigers had their first day of practice yesterday so it’s definitely a sure sign that football is right around the corner. Alabama was picked first in a pre season poll released today by USA Today which should come as a shock to nobody.
We’ll be back on Monday with a blog looking back at all this weekend’s sports action and looking ahead to what’s on tap for next week. Thanks as always for taking the time to check out this and all the other blogs on the site and remember your comments are always welcome especially the favorable ones. Negative comments should be directed to another newspaper’s blogs.
Have a wonderful weekend!
