  • Rural Fire Suppression Grants Awarded

  • Two fire departments in Linn County, as well as one in Chariton County, recently received grant funds to purchase fire suppression equipment.
    Fire Departments in Bucklin, Laclede, and Sumner have received $2,819.28, $2,067.38, and $2,767.63, respectively, from the Missouri Dept. of Conservation, Forestry Division, to be used for the purchase of ‘personal protective gear and firefighting equipment.’
    According to a press release from the Dept. of Conservation (DOC), Forestry Division, the three local fire departments are among the 82 in Missouri “receiving up to $4,000 to help with the purchase of personal protective gear and firefighting equipment, for wildfire as well as structure fire suppression efforts.” The total funding awarded to Missouri fire departments through the matching funds grant program this year is $354,467.
    The DOC release further explains, “Fire departments are required to match 50 percent of the funds which are provided by the Mo. Dept. of Conservation and the U.S. Forest Service, Volunteer Fire Assistance Program.”
    With the addition of the 50 percent local match, the Bucklin Fire Dept. spent a total of $5,638.55, the Laclede Fire Dept. spent a total of $4,854.18, and the Sumner Fire Dept. spent a total of $5,567.59.
    The Bucklin Fire Dept. purchased two drip torches, six Indian back pack pumps, two back pack leaf blowers, one high pressure water pump with adapters, a floating dock strainer, a trenching axe, hose and a hose wrench set, and two nozzles.
    The Laclede Fire Dept. purchased a chainsaw, a three hydrant spanner wrench set, and two fire swatters.
    The Sumner Fire Dept. purchased seven sets of turnout gear, which include fire resistant jackets, pants, helmets, goggles, gloves and boots.
