The Way I See It
My name is Dennis Miller and I am a lifelong resident of Kirksville, MO. I have been totally blind since birth and a sports fanatic just as long. I like all sports but love baseball and am a proud lifelong member of Cardinal Nation. It is my honor to be given the opportunity to write a blog for the Kirksville Daily Express and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it.

The St. Louis Cardinals are still struggling but did manage to move back to within three games of the Pittsburgh Pirates.  The Cardinals lost two out of three games to the Chicago Cubs over the weekend and wasted a very good pitching performance by Lance Lynn in one of their games and really didn’t show much life except for yesterday’s game in which their bats woke up somewhat.  The Cardinals have their first day off in quite some time today as they can rest up at home before the Pirates come to town for three games starting tomorrow night.  Obviously the Cardinals need to win those games.  They have always struggled against the Pirates but this year even more so and although we all thought the Pirates would fade as the season went along I think it’s pretty clear they are here for the long haul.

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Royals continue to play outstanding baseball and took three out of four from the Boston Red Sox over the weekend.  Boston has been in first place in the American League East for most of the year so taking three out of four from them is quite an accomplishment.  The Royals offense which has struggled for a majority of this season has really come to life and they are playing some excellent baseball right now.  The are within a half game of the Cleveland Indians and could move well past them this week if they can continue to play well against the Miami Marlins who are in KC for games starting tonight.  It was erroneously reported by the idiot who writes this blog that the Royals were playing the Marlins this past weekend but that obviously was not the case.  Anyway, the Royals are still quite a ways behind the Detroit Tigers but the Tigers are coming off a 12 game winning streak.  The Royals have games in Detroit over the weekend by the way.

Jason Dufner whoever he is won the PGA Championship over the weekend.  Tiger Woods broke the hearts of TV executives at CBS and TNT by finishing in a tie for 40th

Kyle Bush hung on to win yesterday’s NASCAR road race at Watkins Glenn for his first Sprint Cup victory in several weeks.  Tony Stewart had won the race five times and would have been the odds on favorite going in but it looks like his season is over after breaking his leg last week and undergoing at least two surgeries that I know of.

Although the Kansas City Chiefs lost their first pre season game to the New Orleans Saints the Chiefs have to be encouraged with the overall play of the team.  The first unit who were only in briefly moved the ball very well and their defense was also solid.  Keep in mind this first game especially was more of an opportunity for the Chiefs to assess what type of team they have in a game type situation.  Although the argument could be made that the Chiefs have some depth issues I came away from last Friday night’s game very encouraged.

In another sign that football is just around the corner the Kirksville High School Tigers had their first practice of the 2013 season this morning as they prepare for their season opener at Southern Boone on August 30.  The Tigers are looking to improve on what started out as a very promising season last year before turning out to be a somewhat disappointing season.  I believe the Tigers first three games are on the road so it will be a while before they play in front of the home crowd.

In fact, I think that most if not all the fall sports at KHS begin practice today.  I look for great things out of all the fall sports at KHS this year.

Truman State’s first practice for the 2013 campaign will be on Thursday.  Their first game is not until September 7 which is why practice is beginning a week later this year.

We’ll be back on Wednesday with another blog as we continue to get ready for what will be one of the busiest and most exciting times of year here at the blog with fall sports starting for both Truman and KHS and the major league baseball pennant races heating up and we can’t forget the NFL either which is very much anticipated around here.  Please don’t forget to check out the other blogs on this site and thanks as always for taking the time to read this one.

Have a terrific week!
