October 3, 1789

The first Executive Proclamation

The first Executive Proclamation in American history was issued in 1789. President George Washington, on October 3, 1789, issued a "Proclamation--Day of National Thanksgiving." Paragraph 3 reads: "Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, ... "
