One driver was killed and another injured Wednesday afternoon on the Highway 71 bypass approximately a mile north of the South Main/71 stoplight.
Maryville Public Safety Director Keith Wood and Sheriff Darren White both confirmed at the scene that the male driver of a gray, late-model Nissan Versa with South Carolina plates died in what was apparently a head-on collision with a light gray Kia sedan.
The female driver of the Kia, which had Missouri plates, was taken to a hospital in a Nodaway County ambulance. The extent of her injuries and the identities of both drivers could not be immediately determined.
Neither vehicle carried passengers.
Wood said the accident, which took place around 4:20 p.m., occurred as the Nissan was northbound and the Kia southbound on the shouldered, two-lane highway. The cause of the collision, which totaled both vehicles, remains under investigation.
Maryville Public Safety officers worked the accident. They were assisted by Missouri State Highway Parol troopers, Sheriff's Office personnel, Maryville firefighters and Nodaway County ambulance crews.
