Bush was certified the winner of Florida's electoral votes by Katherine Harris, going on to win the U.S. presidential election, despite losing in the national popular vote. Although he received 543,895 fewer individual votes than Gore nationwide, Bush won the election, receiving 271 electoral votes to Gore's 266.
