Last night at Tiger Fieldhouse, the Marceline Tigers and Lady Tigers opened the home part of their season. While the Lady Tigers were playing their second game, the Tigers were opening their 2013-14 campaign. Both teams did battle with South Shelby in non-conference action.
The Lady Tigers opened with the Lady Birds and had a back-and-forth first quarter. After one frame, Marceline held a 15-14 lead. Sydnee Brooks had 10 points in the opening frame.
The Lady Tigers held a lead through the opening half, also outscoring South Shelby 11-9 in the second quarter. At the half, Marceline led 26-23.
Marceline continued to show that, as in their previous season, they were a second half team. The Lady Tigers relied on their two most experienced seniors, Brooks and Morgan McCormick, to extend their lead to 41-31 after three quarters.
In the final frame, and throughout the second half, South Shelby’s dominant senior post player was contained by freshman Elaine Ewigman. With South’s scoring threat neutralized, the Lady Tigers won this game 59-44.
In the boys game, the Tigers took on the talented Cardinals. Marceline had one practice under their belt, thanks to their involvement in the football program’s epic season. The Tigers trailed for the entire game, and will have a week to get ready as a team for the Monroe City Tournament.
Marceline lost this game 52-33.
