  • The latest chapter of the Highway 36 Rivalry played out on the basketball court at Tiger Fieldhouse in Marceline on Friday night.  Marceline hosted Brookfield to celebrate their CourtMat festivities.  In a pair of exciting games, Brookfield brought home two wins.
In the girls game, Jaclyn Weydert and Sydnee Brooks scored first for their respective teams, ending a fierce back-and-forth defensive effort that started the game.  This defensive effort saw steals from Samantha Gonzalez for Brookfield and a block for Haili Teeter of Marceline.
A 4-0 run for the Lady Dogs, with buckets from Gonzalez and Bailey Parks would force the Lady Tigers to recover.  Shots fell for Brooks and Teter to help close the gap for Marceline.  But Brookfield would put in shots from Alesa Frey and Sydney Thompson to help them take a 14-9 lead after one quarter was in the books.
Weydert scored first for the Lady Dogs in the second quarter, but a 6-0 run for the Lady Tigers would bring Marceline back into the game.  Points came on this run from Tori Davis and Elaine Ewigman.  Brookfield responded with a run of their own, with points from Sassie Matzen and Thompson.  After this run, the Lady Dogs would extend their lead to double-digits.  But, a three-pointer from Brooks would beat the buzzer, and leave Brookfield with a 33-22 lead at the half.
Counting Brooks’ buzzer-beater, the Lady Tigers would go on a 15-0 run to take their first lead of the game, by a single point.  Brooks was on fire from downtown, and Marceline also got buckets from Ewigman, Molly Shoop, and Morgan McCormick.  A basket from Parks would end the scoring drought for Brookfield.  The teams would go back-and-forth for the rest of the frame, with Brookfield pulling ahead slightly.  After three frames were complete, the Lady Dogs led the Lady Tigers 44-40.
In the final quarter of action, the Lady Tigers offense would go cold.  Brookfield would earn a number of turnovers, outscoring Marceline 15-8 in the quarter, and would win this game 59-48.
In the boys game the two teams, both looking for their first win of the season, got off to a slow start.  Blake Linebaugh and Daniel Haas got the Tigers out to a quick 4-0 lead when the scoring finally started.  But a pair of what appeared to be three-pointers at the time from Austin Taylor for Brookfield gave the Dogs a lead.  One of these shots came back to be ruled a two-pointer.
The teams would go back-and-forth for most of the opening quarter after this, with a late Brookfield run giving the Dogs the edge.  Points came on this run from Ryan Kearns and Tristen Duncan.  After one quarter, Brookfield led Marceline 16-10.
Page 2 of 2 - In the second quarter, the Dogs continued their run, scoring the first four points of the frame on buckets from Kearns.  But, the Tigers would recover with a hoop from Bryce Jobson.  Marceline would hold a slight scoring edge in the quarter, and would close the gap to three at the half, with the Dogs leading 25-22.
In the third quarter, Marceline would again outscore Brookfield, thanks to an amazing display of marksmanship from Haas.  Haas drained a number of three-pointers for the Tigers in the frame.  Many of these shots came on open looks.  After three quarters were in the books, the Brookfield lead was cut to 37-36 over the Tigers.
In what may well have been a case of “anything you can do, I can do better,” Tristen Duncan showed off his range with a number of three-pointers for Brookfield in the fourth quarter.  With hoops seeming to come from all over for the Dogs, and the Tigers offense stalling out, Brookfield would go on to outscore Marceline 25-10 in the final frame.  In the end, Brookfield won this game 62-46 for their first win of the season.
