  • The Linn County Lady Mustangs traveled to Pershing Arena in Kirksville at Truman State University on Saturday for a Class One Quarterfinal basketball game.   The Lady Mustangs saw their season come to an end, but can take small comfort in their record season.
The Lady Mustangs took on Marion County, and fell behind early on.   Linn County had trouble to start the game with Marion’s press.   But in the second quarter, the Lady Mustangs would battle back, limiting their opponents to one shot on the offensive end, and would close the gap to one point at the half.
In the third quarter, Linn County would go on a long run, taking the lead for the first time in the game.   All told, the Lady Mustangs outscored Marion County 31-19 in the second and third quarters.   But Linn County would be outscored in the final frame, and Marion County would battle back to tie the game.
In the overtime period, the Lady Mustangs would score only two points.   WIth little recourse but to foul, Linn County would see themselves fall.   The Linn County Lady Mustangs ended their season with a 51-46 loss to Marion County in the Elite Eight.
“We had a great run, the kids played hard tonight,” said Head Coach Gerald Knight.   “We got up by five with a couple of minutes to go, but got some bad calls late in the game.   They hit a couple of big shots late to get back in the game.   We struggled to get stops down the stretch.”
Looking at the game’s stats:   the contest saw three ties and nine lead changes.   Linn County had 30 points in the paint, 13 points off of turnovers, and 16 second chance points.   As a team, the Lady Mustangs shot 39.5 percent from the field, went 1-12 from three-point land, and shot 64.7 percent from the free throw line.
