  • Earlier this week, the Marceline R-5 Board of Education hired Josh Gannan as the Middle and High School P.E. coach, as well as Head Boys Golf coach, assistant High School football coach, and Head Boys Basketball coach.  He replaces John Kruse as the Head Coach of the Tigers basketball team.
The very next day, Coach Gannan met with his new basketball team, taking some time to get to know his players, and to plan their summer hoops schedule.  While he will be a three-sport coach at Marceline, Coach Gannan is a hoops man first.
“If I had my way, I would be known just as a basketball coach,” said Coach Gannan.  “I played college football, but if I was a little taller I would have played college basketball.  My Dad got us all started with a travel basketball team in third grade.  I really enjoyed playing, all the way through high school.  When it was done, I knew I was done playing competitively.”
In his playing days, Coach Gannan was a standout in football and basketball at Chillicothe High School, graduating in 2004.  He was an All-State linebacker and tight end, and continued his football career at Northwest Missouri State University, graduating in 2009.
Coach Gannan was an All-Conference and All-District basketball player at CHS in his playing days as well.  “I really enjoyed my time playing in high school,” said Coach Gannan.  “It is what made me want to be a basketball coach.”
Coach Gannan comes to Marceline by way of South Harrison, where he was an assistant on the football team, and the head basketball coach.  He had also served as a coach on the staff at Gallatin in basketball and football as well.
“From the teams I have had in recent years, we have been really good at running the floor, and I want to try and do that here,” said Coach Gannan.  “I want us to run fast-paced in the full court.  But in the half court, we will look to move without the ball a lot, keeping the defense on its toes.  Whether we are facing man or zone defenses, I like to keep us a step ahead of the other team.”
Coach Gannan continued:  “Defensively, we will focus on fundamentals, and man-to-man defense.  But we will run whatever fits our team the best, but I like to press if we can do that.  We will want to keep the gas pedal down on both ends of the floor.”
