  • The 2014 Brookfield High School Alumni Banquet headlined the Fifth Annual BHS Alumni Weekend. The event was held on Saturday night at the BHS gym, and featured the Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Jeff Elliott, Class of 1979, served as emcee for the evening and welcomed the gathered alumni to the banquet. Kevin DeVoy, Class of 1969, offered the invocation for the meal. The meal was catered by Elk Creek Cooking and Catering, with assistance from the 2014-15 BHS Cheerleaders.
After the meal, Becky (Clark) Cleveland, Class of 1974, served as the guest speaker for the banquet. Cleveland noted that this was her 40th class reunion and then discussed the many hats she wears on a given day.
Cleveland serves as the Economic Development Director for the City of Brookfield, and she is also a member of the Alumni Committee. Cleveland discussed the many travels in her life, including living in Germany and St. Joseph. But Cleveland noted that she just kept coming home to Brookfield.
In her time at here, in addition to her position with the City of Brookfield, Cleveland also has served as Presiding Commissioner of Linn County. She recalled the hard hit that Brookfield took in 2004, with the leaving of a large factory, and the collapse of the old theater.
Cleveland noted, however, that one could look around town, and see the work being done by the myriad of volunteers in town. She detailed the efforts to bring our graduates home and discussed the Senior Mailbox Project.
She then showed a shortened version of the Senior Mailbox DVD, featuring area business owners and teachers who had come back to Brookfield. Cleveland pointed out that this project has received national attention, and that some of the students have come home to address the graduates as they receive their mailboxes.
Cleveland urged the audience to not listen to the negativity that circulates around gathering places in Brookfield, but to instead focus on the positives. She ended her speech with some words from her late Mother-In-Law, Pat Cleveland, who wrote a letter about her life, how much she loved Brookfield, and a challenge to remember that the community needs people to serve it.
Angie (Smith) Wallace, Class of 1991, then spoke about the honored classes. This year, the classes of the 1940’s, 1954, 1964, 1974, 1984, 1994, 2004, and 2014 were recognized. Wallace also thanked the alumni classes who took advantage of Alumni Weekend to have a reunion.
Donna (Sproul) Hulett, Class of 1969, then inducted the late Jane Chick and Dr. Gary Forrest into the Brookfield High School Hall of Fame. The children of Mrs. Chick: Dianne, Ellen and Loren, accepted the award on behalf of their family. Dr. Forrest accepted his own plaque and place in the BHS Hall of Fame.
Elliott led the crowd in a moment of silent prayer for departed BHS Alumni.
