  • The Marceline Tigers are coming into week two with a 1-0 record, a position that every team wishes they were holding as well. Last week, the Black Rage football team took care of business on the road against Knox County at Edina.
“We definitely were pleased to start with a win,” said Head Coach Kent O’Laughlin.”We have plenty of things to work on this week. But for week one, espeaially with the heat, we endured and played well.”
This week, the Tigers are back at Chester Ray Stadium for their home opener against non-conference opponent Schuyler County. The Rams are coming into this game with a 0-1 record, having lost to Paris last week.
Last season, Schuyler County went 1-9, and ended their season with a playoff loss at South Shelby. The Rams run out of many variations of the Pistol, and averaged 10.8 points per game last season.
“Schuyler has a bunch of really big linemen up front,” said Coach O’Laughlin. “We have to be ready to stay low and use quickness to cause problems. If we don’t, they are way bigger than us, and it could cause us some size problems.”
Coach O’Laughlin continued:  “They are going to run power-type stuff and then they will run some Spread Pistol to spread you out. We have to stay low and get off of the ball.”
Players to watch out for are quarterback Daniel Haley, and wide receiver Lane Gray. Michael Anders anchors the offensive line, and Braxton Shaw is their primary running back.
Preseason scouting reveals that the Rams run a base 4-4. However, in week one against Paris, the team utilized a nickel-package variant. Last year, Schuyler County allowed an average of 39.4 points per game.
“It appears they like to run a variation of a 3-3-5, but we will have to see if they stay with that this week,” said Coach O’Laughlin. “Last week, they played a Spread team, so very likely, they will run something different this week.”
Coach O’Laughlin continued:  “We have to take care of the football, as always, and communicate up front. I thought that for the most part we did a decent job of communicating up front last week. This will be even more important this week, as we are not sure what they may throw at us.”
The 1-0 Marceline Tigers host the 0-1 Schuyler County Rams in non-conference action this Friday night at Chester Ray Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. as of the writing of this preview.
