  • The Brookfield Lady Dogs softball team hosted their second home game of the young season last night. This time, the Lady Dogs welcomed South Shelby to Rusk Park for their CCC opener.

  • The Brookfield Lady Dogs softball team hosted their second home game of the young season last night. This time, the Lady Dogs welcomed South Shelby to Rusk Park for their CCC opener.
    The game opened with Morgan Ewing on the hill for Brookfield. Ewing racked up one strikout in the top of the first, with South Shelby sitting down scoreless after four at-bats. Brookfield went down in order in the bottom of the frame. After one inning, the game was tied 0-0.
    The Lady Birds went down in order in the top of the second, with Morgan netting two more strikeouts, and a running catch by Karissa Trentham. Jaclyn Weydert led off with a walk, and took third on a one out single by Taylor Ewing. Ewing would take second on a defensive indifference. Morgan ewing helped her own cause with a single, scoring Weydert and Taylor. Morgan took second on the throw to the plate.
    Trentham reached on an error, scoring Morgan from second. Trentham took second on the throw. Bailey Parks reached on a two out bunt, sending Trentham to third. Trentham scored on a passed ball, and Samantha Gonzalez was walked. However, she ended the frame stranded on base. After two innings, the Lady Dogs led 4-0.
    South Shelby went down in order in the top of the third. Weydert led off with a single, but would be forced out at second while Gabrielle Corf reached on the Fielder’s Choice. Taylor Ewing sacrificed Corf to third showing speed on the pads. Morgan Ewing was struck by a pitch, and took first. The pair ended the frame stranded. After three innings, Brookfield led 4-0.
    South Shelby went down in order in the top of the fourth, with Morgan picking up two more strikeouts. Gonzalez singled with two outs, but was caught stealing to end the inning. After four innings, the Lady Dogs led 4-0.
    The Lady Birds were again set down in order in the top of the fifth, with Morgan gaining another strikeout. Megan Kearns singled to start the home half of the inning, and would take third on an error that got Corf on base with one out. Corf took second on the same error. Taylor Ewing was hit by a pitch. Kearns was picked off at home, but Corf and Taylor both took second and third bases, respectively. They ended the inning stranded. After five innings, the Lady Dogs led 4-0.
    South Shelby sent five to the plate in the top of the sixth, but came away empty. Morgan racked up another strikeout in the inning. Vestal was hit by a pitch with one out, and took second on a passed ball. But, she ended the inning stranded. After six innings, Brookfield led 4-0.
    The Lady Birds made some noise in the final inning, sending four to the plate. But a double play from Taylor to Gonzalez would end the threat and give the Lady Dogs a 4-0 home conference win.
