  • Pershing Museum Coming Along

  • In the LCL’s “Stories We Are Watching in 2014” feature from January of this year, we listed the progress of the Pershing Museum and Archives in Laclede as one of the topics we were looking forward to seeing develop this year. Thanks to members of the Board, and Pershing State Historic Site Director Denzil Heaney, the LCL got a tour of the work in progress earlier this week.

The outside of the museum looks similar to the way it did when the property was deeded over to the Pershing Park Memorial Association. But a step or two into the doors reveals the progress that has been made over the course of a year.
The museum will contain a welcome area for tours in the main entryway. There will be a receptionist area and gift shop in the front of the building as well.
There will be a clerical office off of this area in the main concourse. Also off of the main concourse are the bathrooms and a theater. This will serve as the first thing that visitors see, and will also lead to the museum area.
From there, the museum will begin through a main door just past the theater. The museum will feature a serpentine path through it, chronicling the accomplishments of General Pershing as he began his career at West Point, commanded the Allied forces in World War I, and eventually retired. The ambulance will also be in the museum. It will be in a large area just outside of the special exhibits room.
The special exhibits room will feature artifacts from General Pershing, such as rings, a sword, and other items that don’t fit with the standard exhibits. This room will be a brick room, and it will be secured to protect these precious artifacts.
