The Pershing Park Memorial Association (PPMA) and Pershing Park Administrator Denzil Heaney have taken one giant step closer to making the Pershing Memorial Museum and Leadership Archives a reality by securing the pledge of the Missouri Army National Guard to construct the proposed Pershing archive repository. There’s just one catch. Although the Army National Guard will build the museum and archives at no cost, funds for the materials must still be raised. To secure those funds, Heaney and the PPMA Board are asking veteran’s groups (i.e. VFW, American Legion, Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association) to participate in a fundraising effort that will become known as the Pershing ‘150’ Challenge.
Yesterday, Heaney, Commander Bob O’Dell with Brookfield VFW Post 4557, PPMA Board President Judge Robert Devoy, and other members of the PPMA Board traveled to Columbia to attend the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) state convention. On the convention’s agenda is a resolution submitted by VFW Post 4557 that outlines the Pershing ‘150’ Challenge and asks for the Missouri VFW’s blessing and financial support. If the Missouri VFW approves the resolution it will go to the national VFW, the Veterans of Foreign Wars USA, for its approval and participation.
Heaney, the PPMA Board representatives, and possibly members of our local American Legion Posts plan to also attend the American Legion state convention in Jefferson City on July 7. At that time a similar resolution will be voted upon, and if it is supported by the American Legion at the state level, it will be submitted to the National American Legion for its pledge of support.
Essentially, the resolution states, “The Pershing Park Memorial Association has budgeted a minimum $450,000 for materials required to begin the construction of the museum building.” However, $450,000 is just a start and might not pay for much more than the proposed metal building shell. The PPMA has also “budgeted $400,000 for exhibit design and construction of the tornado and fire-safe archives and the internet technology necessary for providing on-line virtual tours of the museum and archive access.” In addition, the PPMA has “budgeted $200,000 for an operating endowment fund.”
Heaney says the absolute fundraising goal for the museum, archives and operating endowment will be about $1.2 million.
