The Marceline Tigers football team played for a District Championship Friday night at Princeton in a battle of the Tigers. The boys in black and gold lost this battle, but will still play on in the MSHSAA playoffs, taking on Westran on Wednesday for a shot at post-season glory.
Luke Hustead kicked off for Marceline and got the game going. The teams circled each other like heavyweight prize fighters feeling out the other for weaknesses. Both offenses sputtered after short gains and the teams would exchange punts to start the game.
Princeton had a long drive on their second possession and would score on a 34-yard touchdown run to cap off their 13 play, 75 yard drive. The two-point conversion was no good, leaving Marceline down 6-0 as the first quarter came to a close.
End Q1 – Marceline 0 Princeton 6
The Black Rage offense went on the attack, starting at their own 17 yard line. Randal Rosebaum, Matthew Shoop and Austin Bruner would combine to earn the Marceline boys their first fresh set of downs in the contest. Bruner would earn another first down in the drive as well, running the ball to near midfield. The drive would end, though, on a fumble a few plays later.
Princeton capitalized on this turnover, and scored on a 42 yard, seven play drive. The score came on a six yard touchdown run. The conversion was again no good, leaving Marceline down 12-0.
Q2 4:28 – Marceline 0 Princeton 12
Marceline would get back the ball after the kickoff, and appeared to be en route to a three-and-out. A fake punt on fourth down went to Dylan Clubine, who was ruled down just one yard short of the marker, despite the junior’s best efforts.
Princeton would drive the remainder of the field on the ensuing drive, eating up much of the second quarter’s clock. In the course of this drive, Shoop would go down with a stinger, bot would return to action in the second half. Princeton eventually scored on a one-yard run, capping off this 10 play, 46 yard effort. The conversion was again no good.
Q2 10s – Marceline 0 Princeton 18
Bruner would take a knee to send the teams to the locker room for the halftime respite.
