An act passed by our lawmakers in Jefferson City recently raised the minimum teachers salary in Missouri to $24,000 per year for the 2009-2010 school year. This is a $1000 raise from the rate in the last school year. The minimum salary for a teacher with a Master’s Degree and at least 10 years experience also went up from $24,000 to $33,000. The good news, though, is that the area’s school district’s are above these averages already.
“We are above the minimum, so this won’t cause us this big of an impact,” said new Meadville R-4 Superintendent Ron Holcer. “Our biggest problem is our declining enrollment.”
“I feel that the minimum teacher’s salary is something that is focused on too much,” said Marceline R-5 Superintendent Gabe Edgar. “The salary structure is made more to retain teachers than to recruit them. I wish we could do more [salary-wise] but we are fortunate to be able to stay ahead of the base salary.”
