As I Recall - You Never Can Tell

The newlyweds on that February 23rd, 1927 just knew they would escape being shivareed. A shivaree (from the French charivari, noisy serenade) was a standard wedding-night event, at least in rural areas, but they were going to escape it. The weather had played into their hands..

Brookfield Good News - Rally at the Capital, Singing in the Chapel, 99 Years, 9 Months & Counting!

This week twenty people from Brookfield, ten from Marceline and several others from around the County arrived in Jefferson City for the annual Great Northwest Days at the Capital.  Brookfield has been involved for numerous years in this event which offers us an opportunity to showcase our community to high ranking state department personnel, Legislators and statewide elected officials.  The Brookfield Area Growth Partnership has developed a first class traveling display unit over the several years of our involvement and each year we focus it on different business & industries and other elements of our community that best exemplify Brookfield’s most impressive attributes.  Northwest Days is a time to “rub elbows” with the folks who can have an impact on this area’s future success and growth - you can bet these opportunities do not slip by without the best efforts from our local leadership.

On and Around Main Street USA - My Early Days in Marceline...

Often I find myself reliving some of the early times in Marceline. Upon arrival in 1961, my first priority was learning the ins and outs of the city. My radio studio was located next to - what is today - Yocum Jewelry. Across the street in the building now occupied by Ma Vic’s was Tele-Rad Engineers, the TV and radio repair shop, owned and operated by John Leach. John took me under his wing, so to speak. He taught me the differences in pronunciation of the unique Marceline family names, street names and gave me a quick history lesson to help me understand some of the things I would be faced with in writing and delivering the news. His right hand man was Don Levell who was also helpful in getting acquainted and later became my next-door-neighbor.

Capitol Report - Transparency Ensures Accountability

Our current economic challenges have caused many Americans to rethink the way they handle their personal finances, and it has prompted a renewed interest in the way government manages our hard-earned tax dollars.  While this renewed interest has primarily focused on the growing debt of the federal government, the reality is that states and local governments are also taking on record levels of debt.  One of the best ways to ensure governmental accountability to the hard working citizens whose tax dollars pay the bills is through an open and transparent process where information is easily accessible to the taxpayers.

Straight Talk With Sam - Budgets Set Our Priorities

Last week the President laid out his plans in the annual State of the Union address. In the coming weeks, the President will submit a budget for the year and Congress will begin to debate it. Budgets are about priorities and this is where the hard work of balancing our nation’s budget should begin.

Finding Common Ground - A Foolish Consistency

My wife is a wonderful woman, but sometimes when a critical need arises she likes to ignore it as if it didn’t exist. Invariably, fulfillment of that need becomes so urgent that looking away is no longer possible, and during the time she spent behaving as if there was no need, it became even more critical. Such is the case with our ‘crumbling infrastructure’ during this election season when most of the presidential candidates are collecting votes by promising no new taxes and shying away from funding for improvements to our systems of vehicular and pedestrian transport, water purification and distribution, etc.
