It was a warm, peaceful afternoon on Thursday when the Mexico varsity tennis team hosted Boonville for a North Central Missouri Conference meet.
Because this was a league contest, that meant playing six singles matches and six doubles matches, and, as it turns out, the Pirates are having quite a season. What this meant for the Bulldogs was that despite their best efforts they still ended up losing 12-0
In singles play at No.1 for Mexico Ryan Shopher was defeated by Francesco Bona 10-1, at No. 2 Boonville's Kyle Chrisman defeated Muhammad Waheed 10-5 and the Bulldogs Kaleb Mason was downed at No. 3 by Luke Rehagen 10-6.
At. No. 4 it was the Pirates Gaabe Rumbaoa that beat Andrea Maffezzoni 10-2, Mexico's Steven Owings fell at No. 5 to Josh Chrisman 10-0 and at No. 6 Boonville's Quin Gentry got the better of Ryan Pemberton 10-3.
As for the doubles matches, at No. 1 the Pirates Bona/Kyle Chrisman bested Shopher/Waheed 10-2, the Bulldogs Mason/Owings at No. 2 lost to Rumbaoa/Gentry 10-0 and at No. 3 Boonville's Luke Rehagen/Will Rehagen earned a 10-3 victory over Maffezzoni/Pemberton.
Mexico's Casey Hamilton/Ethan Prior at No. 4 found the going just as tough, getting stuck on the wrong side of a 10-5 decision against Andrew Pefferman/Landon/Weaver and at No. 5 Lucas Ziegelbein/Dalton Pannell of the Pirates beat the Bulldogs Spencer Harris/Coleman/Mayhew. Carter McIntosh/Randy Hernandez had the closest match for Mexico, losing at No. 6 to Andrew Matteson/NickWeixeldorfer 10-7.
Mexico next took the court Monday in Columbia at Hickman, on Tuesday the team hosts Kirksville for a NCMC match and on Thursday the squad has a league contest at Hannibal.
