ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T tied a record this season as seven of its teams were named as team academic award winners by the Great Lakes Valley Conference for the recently completed 2017-18 school year.
The seven Miner squads to finish the academic year with a grade point average of 3.30 or better were headed the by the newest program – the women's golf squad that recorded the highest mark at 3.56. The team was one of 13 golf teams in the GLVC honored for its work in the classroom.
Along with the golf team, the other six S&T teams to reach the 3.30 mark as a team included the women's volleyball, soccer, cross country, track & field and softball programs as well as the men's soccer team.
All 15 women's soccer teams across the GLVC were honored, while S&T's volleyball team, which has earned the team academic award in all nine seasons it has been presented, was among 14 GLVC teams honored in that sport as was the case in softball. The cross country team – which also won the award for the ninth time -- was among 11 to land the award, while the track & field team was one of the nine recipients and S&T's men's soccer team was among six in the conference to be named.
The seven teams named matched the seven S&T teams named at the conclusion of the 2011-12 academic year.
A record 149 teams from the GLVC's 15 institutions – 109 women's teams and 40 men's programs – were honored with this award. Maryville University had a league-high 16 sports that earned the team award.
