The students at Meadville Elementary School were presented with a challenge and an opportunity recently. Their principal, Jeff Haley, and their Superintendent, Ron Holcer, offered the hair on their heads to the students in exchange for a certain number of minutes spent reading.
“It’s all about getting the kids to read,” said Haley. “A haircut is a small price to pay.”
The students were presented a goal: 41,800 minutes of reading time from the kindergarten class through sixth grade. Each grade level was given a different goal per student: kindergarten and first grade were to read 50 minutes per week at home, second through fourth grades were to read 100 minutes per week at home, fifth and sixth graders were to read 150 minutes per week at home. If everyone succeeded in meeting those goals, their Principal and Superintendent would get their heads shaved at an assembly.
The students gathered in the gym yesterday at 3 p.m. to eagerly await the results of their endeavors. A pair of chairs with aprons and clippers on them sat in front of the students, the sign of their prize. The buzz in the room was even affecting the high school class that was on the opposite end of the gym.
