This week is M.E.T.S. week in Missouri, as proclaimed by the Legislature and Gov. Jay Nixon. What is M.E.T.S. week? M.E.T.S. stands for math, engineering, technology, and science. This was done in an interest to better expose these areas of study for school-age children. So with this in mind, the first week of March is now M.E.T.S. week.
“If Missouri students become inspired by math and science at an early age, there is a greater likelihood they will want to enter those growing career fields when they graduate, and our state’s workforce will be better equipped for the jobs of tomorrow,” Gov. Nixon said in a press release. “I give my whole-hearted support to our K-12 schools and our colleges and universities as they increase the interest of young people in these disciplines and encourage our communities to join in activities that foster interest in the sciences.”
“We try and include [M.E.T.S. Week] in with career and technical education month as they are so close together,” said Brookfield Area Career Center Director Carey Smith. “The future of economic development and jobs is to have a good solid base in M.E.T.S. related areas [such as] science, math, and technology. It is very important that students have a solid foundation in these areas to have a competitive workforce.”
