Wow is it busy at the “Y”.  With the weather a snowy mess, the last 5 or 6 weeks have been a busy place here at the YMCA.  Sometimes it has been a little overcrowded and I would like to thank everyone for their support and to encourage everyone to please be patient with each other during this busy time.  With that in mind, please remember that the YMCA is here to serve all the people that come into our doors.
The new session started last week and classes are going great!  The boot camp class seems to be a big hit again this session.  Also, in this session we will be starting youth flag football and 5-a-side soccer.  One question I get a lot is can kids sign up to do both programs?  The answer is YES; if kids want to do both programs the games will be on different days and will not overlap.  The only thing that might overlap is practice times because practice times are up to the volunteer coaches.
Our soccer program will play games on Saturdays starting in April.  We will have teams from all over Linn County.  Kids will get a chance to be more of a part of the game with our 5 a side system because they will do less standing around and more kicking the ball (which is all the little kids want to do anyway).  If you haven’t been in this program it is a fun and family friendly program with kids playing an equal amount of time in each game.  All of our games are held out front at the YMCA.  If you don’t have kids playing I encourage you to stop by anyways and watch these kids compete.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays starting in April we will be playing youth flag football for kids in the 1st through 6th grades.  This program is a blast for the kids and the coaches.  The coaches are actually on the field with their team and get to play the quarterback position.  We do this so that ALL kids will get a chance to handle the football more often.  We have a special rule that one out of every four downs have to be a run play.  This is to ensure that all kids get to handle the ball whether they can catch the football our not.  It’s not to late to sign up for soccer or football, just stop by and we’ll be glad to get you enrolled.

The entire YMCA column can be seen in 03-03-10 Linn County Leader.
