As the young man accused of breaking into a 65-year-old Brookfield woman’s home and forcibly raping her has been in custody in Kentucky, local residents may have been feeling a renewed sense of security.
However, a 70-year-old Brookfield woman has reported to police that at about 2 a.m. Wednesday, she heard someone raising a window in the spare bedroom of her home on East Helm Street.
The woman reports she had been awakened by some physical discomfort she was experiencing and just happened to be in the spare bedroom when the attempted intrusion was made.
According to the elderly resident, she went to the window and saw a large-framed man very near to the window. The window screen had been cut, and the storm window its seller had guaranteed couldn’t be raised more than two inches was fully raised.
“I thought I could leave it open two inches, and no one would be able to raise it any higher,” she explains.
Upon encountering the resident, the man and a second, smaller person behind him fled northbound on foot.
Police are investigating and would appreciate any further information anyone can provide.
In the meantime, local residents are cautioned to secure the doors and windows in their homes.
Chase Jackson Update
According to Linn County Prosecutor Tracy Carlson, Kentucky’s possession of stolen property charge on Chase Jackson has been dropped, and Jackson is being returned to Linn County to stand trial for forcible rape and burglary.
A private agency that specializes in transporting subjects in custody will be bringing Jackson back at Linn County’s expense.
Carlson plans to add a charge of stealing a motor vehicle to Jackson’s current charges.
It is believed that the 2002 Dodge Neon stolen from the 500 block of East Hauser Street in Marceline, and subsequently recovered in Louisville, KY., provided the means by which Jackson made his flight to Kentucky on or about August 13. However, Carlson will have to establish the chain of events and connect Jackson to them when the case goes to trial.
To date, Jackson has made no admission of guilt and will be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Prosecutor Carlson plans to have Jackson arraigned on charges of forcible rape, burglary and stealing a motor vehicle as soon as possible.
